Dump cakes are a fun way to use cake batter.

Why is Dump Cake Called Dump Cake?

It is called dump cake because you literally dump all of the ingredients into a cake pan without mixing.

There are dump cake versions where the cake mix is pre-mixed then poured over the top, but this recipe uses it dry to make more of a crumb-like topping.

Dump cakes are very similar to cobbler recipes but is not a cobbler.

Both recipes include a delicious fruit filling.

So What Is the Difference Between a Cobbler and Dump Cake?

While dump cake is similar to a cobbler, they are different because dump cake recipes use a cake mix.

Whereas cobbler recipes use pie crust or biscuit to top off the fruit filling.

Either way, both or delicious ways to enjoy fruit filling. But I think I prefer dump cakes.

Does Pineapple Dump Cake Need to Be Refrigerated?

The answer is yes.

Dump cake with pineapple needs to be refrigerated after baking so the fruit doesn’t spoil.

I recommend refrigerating all cakes or pies made with fruit for this very reason.

It is recommended to finish consuming dump cake recipes within 5 days.

Beyond that, the fruit will start to get old and grow bacteria.

Directions to Make Dump Cake Pineapple Recipe

This recipe could not be quicker or easier to make. The most time-consuming part is baking.

To make this upside-down pineapple cake recipe, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Then add the first layer of crushed pineapples and spread it out evenly on the bottom of the baking dish. If you have fresh pineapple and want to shred it, that is fine too.

I used some of the leftover pineapples from my centerpiece idea that I made for a Hawaiian theme dinner party.

As an aside, you can really taste the difference between fresh versus canned, so if you happen to have fresh pineapple on hand, use it!

Add the next layer of cherry pie filling and smooth it out over the pineapple so it’s a nice even layer.

Then top the cherries off with some fresh blueberries.

Add the yellow cake mix dry. That’s right – you read that right. Top it off dry.

And then top off the dry cake mix layer with slices of butter.

Try to evenly distribute the butter over the cake mix layer so it even melts and cooks down the cake mix.

It will form a soft crumb-like topping.

If you prefer a thicker cake topping, then premix the yellow cake batter according to package directions to pour on top of the blueberries and omit the butter step.

  1. Believe it or not, I have never heard of a dump cake! It looks and sounds delicious, though! I love to make blueberry cobbler in the summer when the wild Maine blueberries are in season. It is not quite as easy to make as this, but still pretty darn easy!

    1. Oh that sounds good. I love cobbler. We don’t have any berry bushes here like I grew at my old house, I need to get them in the ground stat so I can make a fresh cobbler like that! I bet its amazing!

    1. I don’t drain the crushed pineapple but you can if you want! They are the 15 oz cans. Thanks for asking I’ll add that to the recipe.

    1. I don’t think so – I believe it will bake the cake then on top instead of making it crumbly. If you try it, let me know I’d love to hear! xo
