How to Instantly Update Your Living Room? Swap Out Throw Pillows for Fall

One of the simplest and most effective ways to give any room an instant fall makeover is by changing your throw pillows. A single change can transform the entire feel of a room, and, honestly, swapping them out is the easiest way to achieve a fresh look for the season. This simple act is a fundamental tip for fall decor.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE to change out my throw pillows. I often just buy new pillow covers because they’re easier to store than actual pillows. But throw pillows add such a vibe when it comes to seasonal home decor, so consider changing them out to freshen up your home.

This is the perfect solution for anyone asking, “How can I quickly update my home for autumn?” or “What are some budget-friendly fall decorating ideas?” By swapping out your current pillows, you can introduce new colors and textures without a significant investment, making it the most budget-friendly way to transition your home decor.

Choosing the Right Fall Decor Pillows

To achieve that cozy autumn vibe, opt for pillows in warm, earthy tones such as deep reds, oranges, and mustard yellows. But don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures! I love to incorporate things like velvet or faux fur to add a touch of luxury and comfort. For an extra dose of fall charm, consider nature-inspired patterns like leaves, acorns, or classic plaid.

As an aside, I am totally getting this cozy pumpkin pillows for my living room to add to my mix and match pillow collection. Isn’t it so cute???

This clever approach of mixing colors and textures creates a cozy, layered look that makes your sofa feel instantly more inviting and perfectly suited for the season. It’s an easy, low-effort way to get a big impact on your fall home decor.

So when you are selecting your new pillows, focus on two key elements: color and texture.

  • Color Palette: Look for pillows in warm, earthy tones that are synonymous with autumn. Think of deep reds, burnt oranges, rich chocolate browns, and mustard yellows. You can also mix in neutral tones like cream or beige to balance the bolder colors. For tips on choosing the best autumn color palette, I shared some great tips in this post.
  • Texture: Incorporating texture adds visual interest and a cozy, inviting feel. Look for materials like soft velvet, chunky knits, faux fur, or even classic flannel. A pillow with a unique texture can be the standout piece that ties your entire fall decor theme together.

You can easily find these budget-friendly pillows at major home stores like Target, Amazon, or Wayfair for under $25, making this a highly accessible DIY fall decor project.

I also love the beautiful neutral textured pillows and subtle patterns from Magnolia. They look great with my cottagecore aesthetic all year round but certainly have that autumn color palette. This year, I am loving all things green and terracotta. Check out my picks here.

Achieving a Cozy, Layered Look

The goal is to create a visually appealing, layered look that feels inviting. A good strategy is to layer pillows of different sizes and shapes, placing the larger ones in the back and the smaller, more decorative ones in the front.

This quick swap can instantly create a cozy, layered look, making your sofa feel more inviting and perfectly suited for the season. It’s an easy, low-effort way to get a big impact on your fall home decor.

Pro Tip: The Secret to Year-Round, Budget-Friendly Fall Decor

While it’s fun to completely swap out your pillows, a more strategic and money-saving approach is to build a core collection of neutral, timeless pillows that work for every season. This clever trick allows you to achieve a beautiful fall decor look without replacing your entire pillow set.

How to Use Mix-and-Match Pillows for All Seasons:

  • Build a Foundation: Start with 2-3 high-quality, durable pillows in neutral colors like cream, beige, or charcoal gray. Choose a timeless texture like linen, durable cotton, or subtle wool. These are your foundational pieces that work all year round.
  • Add Your Fall Accent: With your base pillows in place, simply add a single, strategically placed fall throw pillow. This could be a solid velvet pillow in burnt orange, a cozy knit pillow in deep red, or a pillow with a subtle autumn pattern.
  • The Big Payoff: This method saves you so much money in the long run. Instead of buying a whole new set of pillows every season, you only need to purchase one or two accent pillows to create an entirely new look. It’s the ultimate budget-friendly fall decor hack that lets you “jazz things up” without the hassle or expense of a full seasonal swap.

I bought these for my living room a few years ago and they seriously work all year round! Yes, they are a little pricier, but if you aren’t switching your pillows out every season, it’s about the same and a lot less work in the long run! You can shop these effortless styles here.

How to Add a Layer of Coziness with a Fall Area Rug

If you want to instantly change the feel of a room from summer to autumn, look down. A simple rug change can anchor your entire fall decor theme and add an incredible layer of comfort and warmth.

For me, nothing makes a room feel cozier for fall than a rich, textured rug. It’s a game-changer! When I want to make my living room feel more inviting, I swap out my lightweight summer rug for something with more presence. It just works.

Choosing Your Fall Rug: Tips for Adding Warmth

When you’re ready to make the switch, consider these things to choose a rug that will make your space feel extra cozy.

  • Color is Key: Opt for rugs in deep, earthy colors like burgundy, forest green, or rich caramel brown. These hues ground the space and visually warm up your floors.
  • Embrace Natural Textures: I’ve found that natural materials work best for fall. A jute rug or a sisal rug adds that rustic, organic texture that just screams autumn. They also pair beautifully with layered throws and pillows.
  • Try Layering Rugs: Here’s a pro tip: if you don’t want to buy a whole new area rug, try layering a smaller, decorative rug with a subtle pattern over a larger, neutral one you already have. This trick adds depth and visual interest without a huge commitment.

Fall Decor Ideas: The Evolution of My Area Rugs

You can find affordable area rugs that you can swap out seasonally or use year-round. I lean towards year-round use, but I know a lot of people that prefer to use them more seasonally.

I’ve been doing a lot of shopping for area rugs over the last year. It’s been a bit of a challenge finding ones that work with both my travertine tile and wood floors. So my taste has evolved since we first moved in back in 2021.

For several years, I LOVED the area rug in my formal living room. It has all those rich earthy warm neutrals and nd it looks amazing all year round. We finally got around to painting our formal living room to cover up all that faux finish and I decided to go a bit richer in color with a more classic look. This area rug is a neutral green yet is grounding color for this space that will coordinate with any seasonal decorating style.

I also LOVED the jute area rug I found for the sunroom. It’s super soft and looks great with my plants, furniture, and decor. Over time, I felt like it was a little small, so I swapped it out for this boho farmhouse area rug and really love the result. The space is warmer, richer in color and all ready for fall.

By choosing the right rug, you can completely transform the atmosphere of your space, making it feel more comfortable and ready for the cooler temperatures. You’d be surprised how much a new area rug will refresh your space with a whole new look. Here are a few ideas I found while shopping around. How to Add Cozy Fall Linens to Every Room

Extending the autumn feeling beyond your main living areas is key to creating a truly cohesive and cozy home. It’s such an easy change to make, but adding cozy fall linens to your bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom will have a huge impact on how each space feels this season.

  • Bedroom: My favorite way to transition the bedroom for fall is by swapping out lightweight summer bedding for flannel or cotton sheets. I love opting for warm colors like rust, forest green, or deep brown. Layer on a cozy chunky knit throw at the foot of the bed, and you’ve instantly created a comforting, seasonal sanctuary.
  • Kitchen & Bathroom: Don’t forget these smaller spaces! I’ve found that even a small, fall-inspired towel can make a big impact. In the kitchen, you can replace your everyday dishtowels and oven mitts with options featuring pumpkins, leaves, or harvest motifs. And in the bathroom, just swapping out your hand towels and bath towels to match the fall color palette is such a simple, effective change.

And in the bathroom, refresh your hand and bath towels. It’s such an easy change to make that will have a great impact on the space. Depending on the vibe I’m going for, even a small fall-inspired towel can make a big impact in a small space.

I LOVE the fall color palette of these bath towels. Aren’t they gorgeous?

With our bathroom, I prefer to keep things feeling like a spa with neutral towels like these and my houseplants for an organic vibe. They are super soft and trap moisture after a shower well. I am so not a fan of those towels that don’t actually dry you off!

Fall Bedding From Pottery Barn

I am a HUGE fan of Pottery Barn bedding. It’s always so soft, is high quality, and made to last. I bought this bedding a few years ago for my bedroom. And I love the green. But I’m shopping around for another layer of bedding to get a cozier look.

I am in love with this floral pattern duvet. If my wall-to-wall rug wasn’t full of flowers, I would buy it. To shop more of my favorite fall looks from Pottery Barn, click here.

How to Bring the Outdoors in with Fall Florals and Houseplants

I am a huge fan of plants and flowers—both real and faux! They make any space feel more alive, provide so much character, and truly help boost the mood. So when it comes to fall decor, incorporating nature is an absolute must.

Using Fresh Flowers in Your Fall Decor

One of the simplest ways to add a vibrant pop of color is with fresh fall flowers. Sunflowers, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, zinnias, and dahlias are all excellent choices for creating stunning floral arrangements. I love placing them in vases or rustic containers and scattering them throughout my home.

Faux Florals and Greenery

If you prefer low-maintenance decor, high-quality faux flowers, stems and greenery are the way to go. They can look remarkably realistic and last all season long. I’ve found that a great trick is to mix faux stems with real ones to make your plants and flowers look more authentic. A simple faux autumn leaf sprig on a shelf can instantly give you that autumn vibe! I always add to my faux collection every year, and you can shop my favorite artificial flowers and greens for fall right here.

To learn my best tips for making your faux flowers and greenery look more real in your home, read this article.

The Rise of Houseplants in Fall Decor

While florals are a classic, incorporating houseplants into your seasonal decor is a growing trend. Houseplants are perfect because they provide that organic, green element that’s missing once the outdoor garden goes dormant. They add life and character that lasts all year round, not just for a season.

When styling houseplants for fall, consider placing them in a new terracotta pot or a basket with a warm, natural texture. Plants like the Snake Plant or even a vibrant Fiddle Leaf Fig can give your space a sophisticated, earthy feel. For more details on specific plants, including their light, soil, and watering needs, you can check out my plant care guides.

Don’t Forget the Details: Pumpkins, Gourds, and Wreaths

Much like plants and flowers, it’s essential to add natural elements like pumpkins, gourds, and berries to your fall home decor. Even a single, simple pumpkin on a shelf can make a big impact.

Lately, I’ve been loving these dried gourds that I found on Etsy. I bought some last year and wound up purchasing a bunch more this year because I love the look! If you are looking for some fun faux pumpkins, I rounded a few that I love here.

And of course, don’t forget your doors! A wreath adds such a cozy touch to any front entry, porch, or interior door. This beautiful dried wheat wreath would look AMAZING in my front entry hall, but you can also easily make fresh wreaths using hydrangeas or cut flowers from your garden. It’s a great way to showcase a little seasonal DIY.

Scented Candles and Mood Lighting are Must-Haves for Fall Decor

When it comes to creating a truly immersive fall atmosphere in your home, don’t overlook the power of scent and light. Fall-scented candles play a pivotal role in enhancing the ambiance and making your space feel even cozier. Honestly, nothing feels like autumn more than some warm, glowing fall-scented candles. Pumpkin spice, anyone?

  • Create Your Scent Story: Start with scents that evoke the feeling of fall. Think of classic notes like spiced pumpkin, apple cider, cinnamon, or crisp autumn leaves. These are the finishing touches that make your fall home decor feel complete. I love the big hugs candles from Hearth & Hand at Target and buy them every year. This year’s favorite scents include: Harvest Chestnut, Black Oak and Persimmon, and Salted Honey.
  • The Magic of Mood Lighting: I’m also a huge fan of battery-operated flameless candles and string lights. They provide that soft, warm glow without the worry of an open flame. You can place them on mantels, bookshelves, or tucked into your fall floral arrangements to create a magical, enchanting atmosphere.
  • Pro Tip: Look for flameless candles and string lights that come with timers or remotes—it makes it so much easier to turn several on and off with the press of a button!

How to Add an Earthy Vibe with Organic Textures

Beyond color and scent, the secret ingredient to a truly cozy fall decor theme is texture. By incorporating more natural, organic materials like baskets, terracotta, and wood, you can instantly bring a warm, earthy vibe to any room. This is one of my favorite tips because of how much character these simple pieces add.

  • Baskets and Wicker: Baskets are a fantastic way to add a rustic, textural element. You can use them for everything from stylish storage for blankets and throw pillows to holding potted plants. A simple wicker basket can make a space feel more grounded and natural.
  • Terracotta and Earthenware: I’m a huge fan of using terracotta pots and clay vases for houseplants and floral arrangements. The raw, unglazed finish of these materials brings a beautiful, earthy feel that looks fantastic next to rich autumn colors.
  • Warm Wood Details: Don’t underestimate the power of wood accents. I love using rustic wooden cutting boards in the kitchen as a display piece or placing a stack of firewood in a decorative bucket by the fireplace. These little touches of natural wood bring a sense of warmth and history to your space.

Combining these organic textures is a surefire way to make your home feel more inviting and perfectly suited for the autumn season. I prefer to buy them while thrifting around at flea markets and FB marketplace, but you can easily buy some at big box stores like Target, Wayfair, and Walmart too.

Speaking of which, I’ve got some great tips for what you should never leave behind at the thrift store or flea market here.

Final Thoughts About Sprucing Up Your Fall Decor

And there you have it—a handful of simple, impactful ways to refresh your home for the autumn season. My goal for this post was to show you that creating a cozy fall vibe doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It’s about making small, thoughtful changes.

I know what you might be thinking: “What if I’m a little green thumb challenged?” I completely get it! That’s why I believe so strongly in using a mix of real and faux elements so you can get the look without the work if that’s more your vibe. You can still bring the beauty of the outdoors in with high-quality artificial flowers, pumpkins, gourds, and other natural textures like baskets and wood. It’s about creating a space that makes you feel happy and at home, and there’s no right or wrong way to do that.

I hope these tips inspire you to embrace the season and have fun making your space a little cozier. Happy decorating!

  1. In my plan to simplify my fall decor this year I have slowed down my decorating and am enjoying myself more than in the past where I was totally exhausted after hauling out all those plastic crates. I have limited my self to two themes. Our family room is Pears and Pumpkins and my kitchen Apples and Acorns. Outside are real pumpkins, gourds dried grasses and florals with some lanterns using faux candles on timesaving a pretty wreath on the door.
Have a beautiful autumn and thankyou for sharing your lovely home and gardens with your readers.
