I’ll admit it…I had never heard of a transfusion cocktail until I started golfing this year. The first time I spotted it on the clubhouse menu, I noticed it was made with just about all of my favorite cocktail ingredients: vodka, grape juice, ginger ale, and fresh lime. I ordered one out of curiosity, took a sip, and immediately understood why it’s such a favorite on golf courses.

So naturally, I had to recreate it at home.

Now it’s one of my favorite summer cocktails to enjoy by the pool, while soaking in the hot tub, or after spending a long day working in my flower gardens. It’s light, crisp, and incredibly refreshing without being overly sweet, making it the perfect drink for warm summer evenings and outdoor entertaining.

Whether you’ve just finished 18 holes or simply want an easy cocktail to sip on the patio, this classic transfusion recipe comes together in just a few minutes with a handful of simple ingredients.

What Is a Transfusion Cocktail?

The transfusion is often called the unofficial cocktail of the golf course and has been a clubhouse favorite for years. While its exact origins are unclear, golfers have embraced it as the perfect post-round drink thanks to its simple combination of vodka, Concord grape juice, ginger ale, and fresh lime juice.

The result is a light, bubbly cocktail with just enough sweetness balanced by bright citrus and a hint of ginger. Because it’s easy to make and incredibly refreshing, it’s become a popular choice not only after a day on the course but also for backyard barbecues, pool parties, and summer entertaining.

Make Ahead Tips

Planning a party?

Mix the vodka, grape juice, and fresh lime juice together several hours ahead of time and refrigerate.

When you’re ready to serve, simply pour the mixture over ice and top each glass with ginger ale to keep the bubbles fresh.

For larger gatherings, make a pitcher of the base mixture and let guests add their own ginger ale.

Storage

This cocktail is best enjoyed immediately after it’s made.

If you’ve mixed the vodka, grape juice, and lime juice ahead of time, store the mixture in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Wait to add the ginger ale until serving so it stays fizzy.
