Hi there!

In the Garden

It was literally 100 degrees almost all week long so I barely did a thing outside this week! The only thing I did? Was repot some houseplants in clear nursery pots . Clear nursery pots are great for letting you see what’s going on with the root system.

And with so many to care for, I check the roots before I water and see if they are getting rootbound. Whatever has roots coming out the bottom or look like they are tangling up…I repot. And they are loving it!

As an aside, whenever I repot. I don’t just use potting soil on it’s own. I add both orchid bark, perlite, and worm castings to foster a good root system while improving drainage so they don’t retain so much water. Part of the reason we overwater our houseplants is because the soil isn’t as well draining as it should be. That said, if you prefer not to go through all that work with products, there are pre-made chunky soil mixes that do the same thing.

A black dog with an orange collar lies on a wooden deck, looking toward a lush garden with flowering plants, green foliage, a small pond, and a stone feature in the background.

Gus alerted me to a bunny nest in the backyard lawn. He was really getting into it and I needed to find a way to keep him out. So I grabbed some garden supports I had laying around to help fence him out. You might be thinking – why help the bunnies eat your plants down the road? And I have to say…I am with you.

However, I don’t want my dog to hurt them. They are so cute and a part of nature that I don’t want to hurt. That said, if a fox or some other natural predator takes care of things though…I’m ok with that too cause it is the circle of life. I just deal with bunny damage and protect plants as much as I can. Nature will take care of itself.

As an aside, doesn’t the backyard garden look so pretty right now? I love when I’ve got blooms in planters AND above with those flowering perennials (siberian iris, evening primrose and loosestrife).

The Potager Garden

Given the heat, my cool season veggies have had enough. I harvested my broccolli, more kale, etc, and am at the point where once it cools down, I will pull anything that looks finished for the season and replant something else. Might tuck in more flowers to brighten things up as some of these beds look a bit too green for me but overall, the gardens were really productive this year! Now onto tomato season…and I am totally here for it.

Preventative Screenings

A few weeks ago, I had my annual mammogram and this week, had another colonoscopy. Not fun doing the prep ever but the procedure is super easy. Have you gotten yourse yet?

I have been doing them since I was 36 when both my parents had colon cancer…at the same time! This was I think my 5th one (could be my 6th though). The first time I had one at 36, they found a small tiny noncancerous polyp that they removed. And I had been clean until last year, when they discovered a small noncancerous polyp that they removed.

Because of my age and health history, he had me come back this year and all was great! So now I get to wait two years before doing it again. If you have not had yours yet and are over the age of 50…do not wait to do this screening. Both my parents were in their 50s when it was found. They caught my mother’s in time where it did not spread, but my father’s so was far along that he passed away from a rare form of liver cancer 18 months later.

Plants of the Week!

I’m highlighting some favorite garden blooms from the week so you can see the plants and varieties I’m growing. Here are a few that I’m loving this week!

Going Away for July 4th? Vacation-Proof Your Garden Now!

With the long, anticipated July 4th weekend almost here, many of us are making plans for some well-deserved rest and relaxation away from home. But if you’re a dedicated gardener, you know that a little voice often whispers: What about my plants?!

Leaving your gorgeous annuals, thirsty containers, and growing vegetables unattended, especially during the peak heat of summer, can feel incredibly risky. Will they shrivel? Will all your hard work wilt away while you’re gone?

I am with you! So I’ve put together simple, effective solutions to keep your garden thriving, hydrated, and happy, even when you’re miles away. Get your plants perfectly prepared for your summer holiday with these smart strategies:

1) The Ultimate Peace of Mind: Automatic Watering Systems

Imagine your plants getting the perfect amount of water, precisely when they need it, with zero effort from you. Set up Automatic Watering Systems connect easily to your outdoor spigot and deliver consistent hydration directly to your garden beds with this one or containers with this one. Set a timer for specific days and times, and return to a flourishing garden, not a parched one! I cannot stress enough how well these work!!!

2) Hydrate Containers: Self-Watering Pots & Spikes

Potted plants and hanging baskets are often the most vulnerable to drying out. Self-Watering Pots like thisthis, and this feature clever built-in reservoirs that slowly release water to the roots, keeping plants quenched for days. For all your existing containers that are not on drips, Watering Spikes like these are an ingenious solution – just insert them into the soil with a recycled water bottle, and they’ll provide a steady, controlled drip.

3) Lock in Essential Moisture with Mulch

This simple step is a game-changer and if you didn’t already do it, it is not too late! A generous layer of Mulch around your plants acts like a protective blanket, drastically reducing water evaporation from the soil surface. It also helps keep roots cooler during hot spells. Apply it before you head out, and your plants will thank you by staying hydrated much longer.

4) Provide Sustained Nutrition: Slow-Release Fertilizers

Healthy, well-fed plants are more resilient. Before you leave, consider adding a Slow-Release Fertilizer to your beds and containers. These fertilizers provide a steady, gradual supply of nutrients over weeks or months, supporting robust growth and helping your plants withstand stress while you’re away.

Quick Tips Before You Go!

Beyond the smart products, a few quick actions can make a big difference:

  • Water Thoroughly: Give all your plants a deep, thorough watering right before you leave.
  • Move Houseplants: Relocate houseplants to a cooler area with indirect light to slow down water loss.
  • Group Container Plants: Cluster potted plants and hanging baskets together in a shady spot. This creates a microclimate that helps reduce water evaporation and makes any manual watering easier for a helper.
  • Harvest & Tidy: Harvest any ripe vegetables and deadhead spent flowers. This ensures the plant’s energy goes into new growth, not developing overripe produce or seeds.

Consider a Plant Sitter: For longer trips, asking a trusted friend or neighbor to check in is always a great backup plan!

This July 4th, truly enjoy your getaway knowing your garden is taking care of itself without you! So take a few moments now to set up these vacation-proof solutions and come home to a beautiful, stress-free garden that is thriving.

  • I’ve been thinking about getting an ice machine like this. We keep running out of ice and it would be a convenient way to keep it going with easy access.
  • I also started making fruit infused waters and keeping them out on my counters in these drink dispensers (hence why I need a ton of ice). Perfect for every day use and summer parties!
  • A few months ago, I bought this weighted vest. It comes in different weights. I wear it all the time when I’m working outside and walking and am noticing a difference in how I feel, how my clothes fit, and finally budging the scale. Menopause is no joke!

  1. Stunning pictures, so much variety, and colour combinations. While, there is always garden upkeep, isn’t it nice to sit back and enjoy the slower pace, once the heavier work is done in the spring garden? It is also hot here in south-central Ontario, but there have been a couple of low teen night temperatures, with 30’s, and into the 40’s with humidex, during the day, crazy. Kim
