Looking for some room makeover inspiration ideas? Wait until you see these before and after home improvement updates. Sometimes all you need is a fresh coat of paint!
Before we moved, I painted almost every room in our house to update it from the darker reds, golds, and sages, to lighter and brighter living spaces.
After the move, I started painting rooms to neutralize them from the dark heavy faux finishes.
And what a difference a can of paint makes!
I am by no means a painting expert, but I am not afraid to grab a roller and some paint to completely change the vibe of a room.

7 Before and After Room Makeovers
Since these before and afters are from two different houses, I’ll start with the room makeovers from our new house and wrap them up with our former home.
It’s really amazing how much better these rooms look after painting them!
My 1850 Vintage Farmhouse Before and Afters
Although we just moved in a few months ago, we have been slowly updating rooms.
The former homeowner decorated every room with a heavy faux finish, which I’m sure looked great back in the day.
But now?
It’s outdated, plus it feels very dark and dingy.
Because we aren’t sure what we want to do in each room just yet, we are painting them a neutral white so we view each space without the faux finish distraction.
Before and After Sunroom Makeover
First on the project list was this amazing sunroom.
I’ve always wanted a sunroom and this one is perfect.
It overlooks the backyard zen garden.
And now, my houseplants have a place to reside during the winter months.
Because I used to stuff them in every nook and cranny in my old house.
Just ask my kids. LOL!
But this room was SO overdone with the faux finishes.
The artistry on it is quite amazing but it distracts from the outside gardens, which are GORGEOUS and my plants.
And seriously, there was no surface left untouched.
Even the outlets were faux finished.
Lightening the sunroom up made it all go away so now, you can see the outdoor gardens, as well as my indoor houseplants.
It was a huge upgrade that cost very little.

Before and After Dining Room Makeover
The dining room had a lot going on before we even started priming and painting it.
It had these upholstered walls that took an entire weekend to remove.
Not to mention, a dark and heavy textured faux finish on the ceiling that we weren’t sure what to do with.
We knew we did not want to rip the sheetrock out.
And truth be told, I didn’t mind the marble medallion finish surrounding the chandelier but it drew your eye away from that gorgeous chandelier.
And the outline surrounding the room was not working with my decor.
So we painted it.
And once we painted it all Linen White by Benjamin Moore, it looks pretty amazing!!

Before and After Living Room Makeover
And we painted the family room too!!!
The walls, the trim and the ceiling were all faux finished with venetian plaster.
It looks very pretty but it was SO dark in here.
Painting everything Linen White like the dining room made a HUGE difference.

Rustic Farmhouse Before and Afters
The amount of work we did in our former home cannot go unnoticed.
When we originally purchase our home 23 years ago, it was a tiny 3 bedroom ranch.
And while it was a three-bedroom ranch, we added a staircase to get to the basement without going into the garage, built a two-tiered deck and finished the basement.
Fast forward a few years after having our three girls, we blew the roof off of the ranch and made it a 4 bedroom center hall colonial.
And we painted the entire house in dark sages, golds and reds.
But I painted every room the last few years before we moved and what a difference painting them made.
Before and After Kitchen Makeover
My kitchen renovation is what kicked off the total update of our home.
I painted the kitchen cabinets with chalk paint.
And gel stained this incredible hood vent that looked so bland and boring before.
Overall, it took me less than 3 weeks to renovate the kitchen from start to finish and I painted it all by myself.

Before and After Living Room Makeover
After painting my kitchen, I moved on to my living room.
Which spilled over into the dining room.
Then the front entry hall.
You know how it goes right?
Before, the living room was Harvest Gold by Benjamin Moore.
And I loved it when we first painted this room 16 years ago.
But it needed an upgrade.
So I painted it with Manchester Tan by Benjamin Moore and THIS is what it looks like before.
Before and After Dining Room Makeover
Since I had some paint left over from the living room, I decided to paint the dining room too.
It wasn’t a large space to paint because it has a chair rail.
And remember in my latest spring home tour, where I said my dining room was the same color as our front entry is now?

Before and After Front Entry Room Makeover
And while I was painting the family and dining rooms, I decided I HAD to paint the entry hall too.
It sat between the dining and living rooms, so keeping that gold while the rest was lightened up was NOT working.
THIS is what it looked like before.
And after painting it, I decided our heirloom bench stuck out like a sore thumb.
So you know what I did?
I painted the fabric on it too!
