7 Easy Ways to Spruce Your Home Decor for Fall 2024

Before I start fall decorating, I like to pare down my summer decor and declutter. It is much easier to start with a neutral, clean space.

After paring things down, then I sift through what I already have. Because chances are, I’ve got things in storage that might work this season.

Don’t be afraid to use items that bring in the autumn color palette. Your fall decor doesn’t have to be all pumpkins and gourds! So check the attic and basement storage bins and see what can be used for autumn. For years, I’ve been collecting items and I always forget what I already have.

Plus, looking through those bins first help me stay focused on things I actually need to decorate my home for fall as opposed to senselessly buying the same things on repeat. Do you feel that way too? I’d love to hear that it’s not just me in the comments below!

1. Embrace the Beauty of Cut Flowers and Dried Arrangements

One of my favorite ways to usher in the fall season is by bringing the outdoors in. A simple bouquet of cut flowers in warm autumnal hues can instantly brighten up any room. Or, try drying some of your favorite blooms to create lasting arrangements that can be enjoyed throughout the season.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Arrange a few stems of dried hydrangeas or grasses in a mason jar for a rustic touch
  • Create a dried flower wreath or garland to hang on your door or mantel
  • Press colorful leaves or flowers between sheets of wax paper and display them in frames

2. Embrace Nature’s Bounty

As a gardener, I’m always on the lookout for natural elements that I can incorporate into my fall decor. Fallen leaves, branches, pinecones, and seed pods are all beautiful and free decorations that can add a touch of autumnal charm to your home.

Get creative and arrange these treasures in vases, bowls, or on trays. You can even scatter them across your mantel or dining table for a simple yet stunning centerpiece.

3. Set the Mood with Warm Lighting and Scents

Creating a cozy atmosphere is key to fall decorating, and lighting and scents play a big role in achieving that. Swap out your bright summer bulbs for warmer, softer ones, and add a few candles or string lights for a touch of ambiance.

I also love to fill my home with the scents of the season. Light a few fall-scented candles, use an essential oil diffuser with cinnamon or clove oil, or simmer a pot of potpourri on the stove for a natural fragrance that will fill your home with warmth.

Here are some of my favorite scented candles that I just bought! They are from Magnolia’s Hearth and Hand Line. They last a long time and smell unbelievable! And the jars look really pretty with the rest of my decor. I’ve seen these sell out pretty quickly, so if you want to try them, don’t wait long to buy.

4. Subtle Seasonal Tweaks for Fall 2024

You don’t have to completely change up your decor to create a fall aesthetic. Sometimes, all it takes is a few minor tweaks to give your space a fresh new look.

Try swapping out your throw pillows or blankets for ones in rich fall colors or cozy textures like velvet or faux fur. You can also add a few seasonal accents, such as pumpkins, gourds, or a bowl of apples, to bring a touch of autumn to any room.

Here are some throw pillows and blankets I’m loving right now!

5. Go with the Flow of the Seasons

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from gardening is to embrace the natural rhythm of the seasons. As the days grow shorter and the temperatures start to drop, I find myself drawn to warmer colors, cozier textures, and the comforting scents of fall.

Let the changes happening in your own garden inspire your indoor decor. Pay attention to the colors and textures that are emerging and try to incorporate them into your home.

I ease my way from summer to fall and follow the transition that’s happening outdoors. That way I’m feeling the vibe but not going all in on jackolanterns just yet.

Bonus Tip: Bring the Outdoors in with Dried Florals

Dried florals are a huge trend for fall 2024, and they’re a perfect way to add a touch of natural beauty to your home. And now is a great time to start harvesting blooms from your garden too!

You can create a simple arrangement by hanging a few dried stems from a branch or incorporating them into a wreath. Or, try adding a few dried flowers to a vase or bowl for a touch of rustic elegance.

Keep in mind there are lots of ways to bring the outdoors in – even without blooms! Consider making DIY projects that bring that organic autumn aesthetic to your home. My good friend Jennifer from Cottage on Bunker Hill made these incredibly cool DIY vintage butterfly botanicals that don’t scream fall but would work well with a subtle autumn aesthetic.
