Chicken Soup Recipe Variations and Serving Suggestions
One of the best things about this recipe is how easy it is to customize. You can easily tweak the ingredients to suit your taste or what you have on hand.
Variations
- For a lower-carb option, substitute the pasta with beans (like cannellini beans or chickpeas) or add in more vegetables like zucchini or mushrooms.
- Change up the pasta by swapping out the small pasta for ditalini, tortellini, or egg noodles.
- Add extra flavor by experimenting with different spices and herbs. Consider adding a bay leaf to the broth or a pinch of thyme or rosemary. Other great options include paprika, cumin, or a touch of ginger. Start with a small amount and adjust to your preference.
- Include more vegetables like fresh spinach, peas, or diced potatoes to make the soup even heartier.
Serving Suggestions
Serve this soup with crusty bread for dipping, or top it with fresh herbs like parsley or dill for a vibrant finish. A squeeze of fresh lemon or a dollop of pesto can also add a bright, fresh flavor.

Chicken Soup Recipe Cooking Tips and FAQs
How to Store and Reheat Homemade Chicken Soup
Properly storing and reheating your soup is key to enjoying it for days to come.
Storing Your Soup
To store your homemade chicken soup, first let it cool to room temperature within two hours of cooking. Then, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze the soup for longer storage.
Reheating Your Soup
- Stovetop: Pour the soup into a pot and heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until it reaches a simmer.
- Microwave: Transfer the soup to a microwave-safe container and heat in one-to-two-minute intervals, stirring in between.
In both cases, make sure the soup is heated thoroughly to an internal temperature of at least 165°F (73.9°C) to ensure it is safe to eat. After reheating, you can taste it and add more seasoning if needed.

What’s the Difference Between Stock and Broth?
Chicken stock and chicken broth might seem like they are the same thing, but they are slightly different. While they can have different ingredients, they are generally used in different ways. In general, broth can be sipped on its own, while stock is used more as a dish base.

Final Thoughts About This Homemade Chicken Soup Recipe
What I love most about this homemade chicken soup is how incredibly easy it is to prepare. I can almost always make it on the fly because I keep the base ingredients like carrots, celery, and onions in the kitchen. It’s a wonderful go-to meal for a chilly night, and the kind of simple, cozy dish that makes you feel great.
This recipe is so versatile—I never make it the same way twice. Some nights I’ll swap out the pasta for beans, while other times I’ll add fresh spinach for extra nutrients. My family, however, loves it best when I keep it simple with classic alphabet pasta. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

I made a pot of homemade chicken noodle soup last week; it was so yummy. I like to add fresh rosemary sprigs to mine, but I like your idea of adding garlic. Will try that next time. Soup is one of my favorite winter meals, too; so many yummy recipes!
Oh I bet its good with Rosemary! When we have fresh herbs growing here, it’s the best to snip and add to dishes! Thank you! xo
Hi, Stacy, this sounds so delicious! I’m trying to get into making more homemade soups. I noticed that 2 cups of water is listed twice in the ingredients. Is that correct? If so, do you add 4 cups all at once or is it added at separate times? Thanks so much!
Thank you Vicki!!! Yes that was a double typo I removed it – THANK YOU!!!
Oh man I could use this right now! I have been sick for over a week but I am just slightly getting my appetite back and it looks so good! I always feel better after eating homemade chicken soup. The great thing about your recipe is that I can have it! I have many food allergies including gluten and dairy, so all I have to do is sub the pasta for gf or use beans which I love in soup and omit the cheese.
I will be making this sometime this week or have my teenage son make it (he’s going into culinary school when he graduates.) We are supposed to have a little more snow so it will be wonderful to enjoy this cozy soup.
Thanks for joining the hop!
Amber I hope you feel better! It stinks to be sick. This soup will def help you feel better! It’s such a great comfort food! xo
