Random Things Happening Behind the Scenes at Bricks ‘n Blooms
What a week it was!
In the Garden
While I was still pretty busy in the beds, it seems like there is a bit of a lull. We haven’t had a killing frost yet and it has been so dry, the plants are still going but not looking so amazing anymore. I mean, some sections of my gardens are still beautiful but I am ready to move on. It’s the end of October, I’m in zone 6b, and that first frost is going to hit anytime now.
I want to plant my bulbs and can’t get them in these spaces with all the plants still going so I’m going to be removing them next week. It looks like we could dip down enough this weekend to kill off the plants, but I don’t know! The weather has been really strange this year as we’ve had an uncharacteristically dry and warm summer and fall.
One of the things I want to do is remove and relocate some of the black eyed susans in the welcome garden. It feels really overgrown and they are taking over! It’s my fault because I love to leave the seed heads for the birds but this plant loves my gardens (a little too much!) and needs to be kept in check. So this fall, I need to dig some out and make space.

I also want to turn my attention to my indoor garden now. All of my houseplants are indoors now and I’m figuring out where they thrive best. We’ve lived in our home for nearly 3 years now and with all the large windows we have, it’s a great home for indoor gardening!
So I’ve been setting my sunroom to more of a jungle if you will and I love being in there! I mean I always loved this space but now with all these cool plants, I am loving it so much more. There is a tour in the near future but I’m still getting the space squared away.
Every Christmas cactus I have is blooming now. A little fun fact about the one picture below. These are branches that I recently cut off the mother plant and just stuck them in fresh potting soil. So this is not even rooted yet and it is blooming. It’s one of the biggest reasons I love to grow this plant. It’s super easy, blooms a few times a year, and it’s crazy simple to propagate.

Organizing My Fall Garden Chores
I’m often asked how I get it all done and while I do hire some help to do the heavier lifting type tasks, I break my garden down into spaces that I do each day so the tasks (and the overall jobs) are more manageable.
For example, yesterday, I spent the day in the zen garden, cleaning out the containers and storing them for the winter so it will be easier to clean up leaves. I usually leave them out but with the drought we’ve been having here in New Jersey and the fact that I pulled plants to overwinter them…they just don’t look all that amazing anymore. So gone they went.
It’s freeing to clean and organize spaces and my gardens feel much the same way. When I’m done for the season…I am doooooone.

What I’m Shopping For This Week
It’s been a random week of stuff! I’m starting to look at fall decor for my home and of course, needed a few odds and ends for the garden. Here’s what I’m shopping for this week!
Since I’ve been bitten by the rare indoor houseplant bug, I’m preparing my home to be even more hospitable to indoor plants so they all thrive. After watching some of the newbies really flourish outdoors this summer, I decided to bring that environment indoors for the winter. So plants that will receive less than stellar light are getting plant lights and I’m adding more humidity to my sunroom and family rooms.
I bought a bunch of new to me plants from Canopy Plant Co (not sponsored). Let me tell you how amazing and healthy their stock is! I am so impressed. And wound up buying plants I wanted to get in the first round but held off because I had not ordered from them before. My sunroom is really filling in. I LOVE IT!

I bought a second humidifier to add to my family room. It’s so nice sitting in the plant room now with the additional humidity I think I’m going to be adding more in specific rooms around my home.
I also bought two different multi-tiered indoor plant stands to accommodate all these plants! My collection is really growing and the mish mosh of plant stands I have are starting to look more cluttered. I shopped high and low for ones that appealed to me from all different websites. So I’m trying out this one and this one. I may order more once we assemble and get them in place but I feel like these will work really well and look good. Stay tuned!
In addition to those items, I picked up the following:
- These D shaped moss poles for my new plants that love to climb!
- These clear nursery pots that help you see the root ball of your houseplants so you can really tell whether its time to water or not. I ordered some last week but decided to order more for repotting.
- This systemic insect control for houseplants is a total gamechanger and lasts 8 weeks! If you are hestitant to grow indoor plants because of bugs, this will help with that.
