10 Backyard Design Mistakes That Ruin Outdoor Living Spaces
Avoid backyard design mistakes that ruin outdoor living spaces. Learn how to plan seating, shade, plants, and layout for a comfortable backyard.
Designing a backyard living space is exciting, but it’s surprisingly easy to make costly mistakes along the way. I know because I’ve made more than a few myself.
Over the years, I’ve redesigned several outdoor spaces at our homes, experimenting with furniture layouts, shade structures, plants, and garden seating areas. Some ideas worked beautifully. Others taught me valuable lessons about what not to do.
If you’re planning a backyard retreat, avoiding a few common design mistakes can make the difference between a space you rarely use and one you enjoy every day.
In this guide, I’m sharing the backyard design mistakes I’ve learned through experience so you can create a comfortable and inviting outdoor living space.
If you’re still planning your backyard layout, you may also find my guide to backyard ideas for designing a beautiful outdoor living space helpful as you start mapping out your design.

Backyard Design Mistake #1: Not Planning How You’ll Actually Use the Space
One of the biggest backyard design mistakes is planning the space around how it looks rather than how it will be used.
When we built the lower deck at our former home, I fell in love with a beautiful white all-weather wicker furniture set. It had rocking chairs, a settee, and a coffee table and looked like something straight out of a magazine.
The problem was that it didn’t really fit how we lived at the time. If we sat in that space forty times in twenty years, that might be generous.
The lesson? Before buying furniture or designing a layout, think about how you will actually spend time in the space.
Ask yourself:
• Do you want an outdoor dining area?
• A casual lounging space?
• A place for entertaining guests?
• A cozy fire pit seating area?
Your answers should guide every design decision.

Backyard Design Mistake #2: Choosing Outdoor Furniture That Isn’t Comfortable
Beautiful furniture doesn’t always mean comfortable furniture. Outdoor seating should invite you to sit down and stay awhile. If it’s stiff, too small, or poorly designed, people simply won’t use it.
At our current home, I spent a lot more time researching outdoor furniture. I read reviews, tested seating depth, and chose pieces that were both durable and comfortable.
We ended up choosing all-weather wicker seating with thick cushions, and the difference was incredible. Now those outdoor spaces are used almost every day during the season.
Comfort always wins over appearance.

Backyard Design Mistake #3: Ignoring Sun and Shade Patterns
Sun exposure can completely change how usable a backyard space is. For several years, our deck received intense sun for most of the day. It was simply too hot to enjoy during the summer months.
We tried market umbrellas, but they didn’t provide enough shade.
Everything changed when we installed a gazebo. Suddenly the deck was cooler, more comfortable, and usable throughout the day.
Understanding where the sun hits your backyard throughout the day is one of the most important steps when planning outdoor living spaces.

Backyard Design Mistake #4: Not Adding Enough Shade
Even beautiful patios can become unusable without shade. Pergolas, gazebos, umbrellas, or shade sails can dramatically improve comfort in outdoor spaces.
Adding shade not only protects people from intense sunlight but also helps prevent furniture and plants from suffering sun damage.
Our gazebo created an entirely new microclimate on the deck and made the space far more enjoyable.

Backyard Design Mistake #5: Overcrowding the Backyard With Too Much Furniture
It’s easy to get carried away when designing outdoor spaces. Large furniture sets, decor pieces, and planters can quickly make a backyard feel cluttered.
Instead of filling every corner, focus on creating a few comfortable gathering areas with space to move between them.
Backyards feel more relaxing when there is room to breathe.

Backyard Design Mistake #6: Forgetting to Add Plants Around Outdoor Living Spaces
Plants are what truly connect outdoor living areas to the garden. Without them, patios and decks can feel a little stark or unfinished.
Container gardens are one of the easiest ways to add color and texture to outdoor spaces. They can be placed near seating areas, along pathways, or around patios to soften hard surfaces.
Even a few well-placed planters filled with flowers or greenery can make a backyard feel much more inviting.

Backyard Design Mistake #7: Choosing Plants That Don’t Match Your Conditions
When I first started gardening at our former home, I often chose plants based on what I liked rather than what would actually grow well in the space.
The result? Many plants simply didn’t survive.
Before purchasing plants, consider:
• how much sun the area receives
• access to water
• soil conditions
• how much maintenance you want to do
Choosing plants that match your conditions will save a lot of frustration later.

Backyard Design Mistake #8: Forgetting Outdoor Lighting
Lighting can completely change the atmosphere of an outdoor living space. Without it, patios and seating areas become unusable after sunset.
String lights, solar path lights, lanterns, and landscape lighting can all help create a warm and inviting environment.
Even simple lighting can make a backyard feel magical in the evening.

Backyard Design Mistake #9: Not Creating Separate Backyard Zones
One large open yard can feel overwhelming or underused. Dividing your backyard into smaller zones makes it easier to enjoy different activities.
For example:
• a dining area near the house
• a garden seating area surrounded by flowers
• a fire pit gathering space
• a quiet garden retreat
Designing outdoor “rooms” helps your backyard feel more organized and welcoming.

Backyard Design Mistake #10: Forgetting to Actually Enjoy the Space
The final mistake might be the most common one of all.
For years our family was constantly running from one activity to the next. Between school events, sports, and busy schedules, we rarely slowed down long enough to simply sit outside and enjoy the backyard we had created.
Now that life has slowed down a bit, we spend much more time relaxing outdoors. Whether it’s reading on the patio, gathering around the fire pit, or simply enjoying the garden, those moments have become some of my favorites.
A beautiful backyard is meant to be lived in. So don’t forget to take the time to enjoy it!

Create a Backyard Garden That’s Beautiful and Easy to Maintain
Designing an outdoor living space often goes hand in hand with creating a garden that feels welcoming and full of life. When patios, seating areas, and pathways are surrounded by flowers and greenery, the entire backyard becomes more inviting.
If you enjoy designing outdoor spaces filled with flowers and garden charm, my book The Bricks ‘n Blooms Guide to a Beautiful and Easy-Care Flower Garden walks you through how to create a flower garden that looks lush and colorful without feeling overwhelming to maintain.
And if you like planning your garden projects season by season, the Bricks ‘n Blooms Beautiful and Easy-Care Flower Garden Planner can help you organize planting ideas, sketch garden layouts, and keep notes on what’s working in your landscape throughout the year.

Want Flowers Blooming in Your Garden All Season?

How do you manage mosquitos?? I spend so much time making a beautiful outdoor space and end up not utilizing it when the bugs get bad.
Hey Renata! You can plant certain plants to help keep them at bay but I also use citronella candles and stuff. If they are really bad and you have electricity nearby you can try a fan too. Here is a link to an article I wrote that shares a plant list that repels mosquitos – https://stacyling.com/how-to-plant-a-mosquito-repellent-garden/
