Because when irises are planted too deeply, they'll put out foliage but may not bloom. Here's what you need to know to plant them right and get the most blooms.

For starters, bearded irises need full sun to bloom - this means planting them in a location that gets at least 6-8 hours of full sun.

Bearded irises grow from underground stems called rhizomes, which produce new leaves and flowers each year.

The rhizomes should be planted about 4 inches deep and 12 inches apart to allow for proper growth and flowering.

For best results, plant them in spring or fall so they establish themselves before cold winter temperatures arrive.

When mulching the garden, make sure the rhizomes are not covered by the mulch. If they are, they may not bloom.
