No Greenhouse Needed: Winter Sowing for Beginners

Start seeds outdoors in winter—no greenhouse required! This beginner's guide to winter sowing provides simple steps and tips for successful seed starting.

Gather the supplies.  Milk Jug Potting Soil Seeds Scissors Tape Sharpie Marker

Add drainage holes to the bottom of containers so moisture can drain out. If  using a milk jug, cut the jug in half so it can be filled with organic potting soil and planted. And remove nutrition labels from lids or covers so light is able to reach seeds

Fill the bottoms of containers about halfway with pre-moistened potting soil.

Then sow your seeds.

Attach the cover, tape it closed and label it well.

Remove the cap or add a few holes at the top to insure good airflow. Then move it to an outdoor location that receives sunlight and rain, but is protected from harsh weather.

How late you can winter sow will depend on what you are growing. If it needs a chill requirement, it should be started 4-5 weeks before the last frost.
